15 Leaf Activities for Fall That Require Low Prep (and Bring Lots of Fun!)

Fall leaves are one of the easiest (and free!) materials to use for play. With just a quick walk outside, you can gather everything you need for these fun activities that require almost no prep. From crafts to learning games to simple sensory play, here are 15 ways to use leaves for play indoor and outdoor this fall.

All of these activities can be doable activities too! You can always send or take your child out to collect leaves as an activity first! We love getting a basket and making a list of colors and practicing counting too!

🍂 Leaf Crafts & Creations

1. Leaf Crown

Collect colorful leaves in your backyard or make it a fun fall nature hunt to find all the colors!
Use a strip of cardstock paper or cardboard and create a strip that fits around your child’s head. Glue it together or tape it.
Next you can either glue on the leaves or secure tape (sticky side out) and place the leaves on
Once finished you have the cutest little nature crown perfect for playing prince and princesses!

2. Leaf Animals

Grab a piece of cardboard or cardstock paper then print or draw an animal on it. Here are some home favorites of ours: Hedgehog, butterfly, caterpillar, or turkey.
Use leaves and tap or glue to make the decorative part. For hedgehog it would be its spiny back, butterfly would be the colorful wings, turkeys feathers, etc.

3. Leaf Rubbings

A classic activity that requires only leaves, paper and crayons.
Place leaves under paper and rub crayons on top to reveal the texture. A timeless classic that can be done over and over.

4. Leaf Collage

Again paper, tape or glue, and leaves for this one.
Glue leaves into patterns, letters, or seasonal shapes (like pumpkins or hearts).
You can even just let them make a collage with no instructions.

5. Leaf Bug/animal/monster

Paper, marker, glue/tape and leaves
Glue leaves in a few spots on paper
Have your child use a marker to draw legs, eyes, hair, whatever to turn the leaf into their own creation.

6. Leaf Sorting

Put all your leaves in a basket or bowl
Sort by size, color, or shape. Great for observation and color recognition.

7. Leaf Counting

Write numbers on cards in front of bowls, baskets or just on the floor.
Have them count leaves and place the correct number of leaves on each number.

8. Leaf Matching

Collect pairs of similar leaves, mix them up, and play a matching game.
You can match up similar leaves or if its easier put out baskets with colored paper in them and match the color of the leaf to the basket.

9. Leaf tracing and painting

Press leaves onto paper and have your little one trace around them and color them in. The you have a fun fall creation to hang around your house.
Leaf painting or stamping can be fun for older ones. Use paint or an ink pad to cover the leaf and then press onto paper.

🍁 Gross Motor & Outdoor Fun

10. Leaf Toss

Toss leaves into the air and have them try and catch them in baskets or with a net!
Toss leaves into a water table or pool of water.

11. Leaf shapes

Line leaves up to create paths, letters, or shapes kids can walk or hop along.
Use tape to make shapes and have them toss all the leaves down and sweep them into the shapes. Or you can have them place a leaf outline on the shapes!

2. Leaf Maze/trail

Create a maze or trail with leaves that leads to a fun activity or a yummy fall snack!

13. Leaf Pile Jump

Don’t forget about this classic before the season ends! Rake a pile of leave and have them jump in it or hide!

14. Leaf Wands – Tape or tie a big leaf to a stick and let kids play pretend.

15. Leaf Frames

Cut a frame out of cardboard
Line it with tape sticky side p and have them place leaves on the tape for a fun frames craft.
