I’ve found so many creative ways to use essential oils. They range from freshening the car to making my own solid perfume. These methods skip the harsh chemicals in a lot of home products but still smell amazing. Here’s how I make everyday spaces feel clean, cozy, and toxin-free while smelling amazing.

#1 Laundry freshener

This is by far the one that I use them the most in my home. Typical fabric softeners always make my sensitive skin break out. About 6 years ago, I made the switch and I have never gone back.

Sometimes I just add them to the washing drum. However, adding 5-10 drops of my favorite quality essential oils to 1/2 a cup of vinegar will soften them up!

Then instead of using dryer sheets, I add 5-10 drops to a dryer ball . I throw them in the dryer with my clothes. Everything still smells so good when it comes out…without all the chemicals.

#2 DIY carpet freshener

This one is great if you have carpet or pets. It works for really any fabric. You can use it as a mattress freshener, a couch freshener, or even on rugs in your car.

This one is super easy. All you need is baking soda and 15-20 drops of your favorite oil.

I like to put the baking soda in a big jar and then put the oils in it and give it the ole, shake, shake, shake. Then I just shake it out on the floor. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and then vacuum it up.

Easy peasy and it works exactly the same as the box stuff you can buy.

#3 Semi-solid perfume

If you are like me and have a sensitive nose or sensitive skin, then this is for you.

You can use a neutral lotion like Shea but I just use coconut oil. I fill a small jar with coconut oil and then add a few drops of my favorite essential oil that I’d like to smell like all day. *Essential oil can be irritating so make sure it is diluted enough for your skin, and always test an area before applying fully.

Once this is all mixed together I like to add a small amount to my wrists and neck. Just to give off a nice light scent.

#4 Closet freshener

Totally unnecessary but it does give your closet and your clothes a nice fresh scent.

I always add to a felt pad to hang in with my clothes or place in a drawer. Wool balls or cotton rounds work great for this hack to. A few drops on any of those and placed in the drawer smells so good.

This hack works great for placing a little cotton round in shoes or a gym bag too. Even placing in your trashcan can give a nice soft scent boost!

#5 Shower/bathtub boost

Again, do a test first since these will be on your body but I love to add a little scent boost my bath or my kids bath.

A nice relaxing scent is the perfect way to unwind. I like adding some lavender to a bedtime bath to help everyone calm down. These Little dreams essential oils from Canopy are my favorite to add to my toddlers bath time routine.

You can also hang a diffuser and let the scent release in the hot steam of your shower.

#6 DIY air freshener

One of my favorite ways to give the house a quick boost.

Add about 1 part alcohol to 3 parts water and then essential oil to “taste” basically make it smell as strong as you like. I’m usually good with about 15 drops in a spray bottle full.

Then just point and spray in areas that need it, or if you just want a boost.

#7 Car freshener

I have just recently started doing this and this is my current favorite “hack”

You can get a wool ball and put it on the floor or cup holder. We like the Canopy essential oils. They come with a felt pad perfect for adding oils to and just hanging on your mirror. It gives off a nice mild scent and when it runs out, just add more oil.

Other ways we use them:

  • In our humidifiers in our bedrooms for a nice room scent or with nasal clearing oils when we are sick.
  • In a oil diffuser. We have a cheaper one from Amazon that uses water and works pretty well. However, we have our eye on this nicer one with no water from a brand we really love.
  • We don’t do this super often but you can also make DIY cleaners and add essential oil to them.

If you want to start reducing toxins in your home with easy steps. I highly suggest beginning with things like those listed here. Simple swaps that are low effort but will reduce the toxins in your home a lot.
