Fall is my favorite season for sensory play. The crisp air, the changing leaves, and the warm, nostalgic scents that instantly make a home feel inviting. This cozy homemade playdough brings all of that magic right to the table. It’s easy to make, taste-safe for little ones, and the perfect way to celebrate autumn with textures, colors, and scents that kids (and parents) love.
Everything is starting to cool off. We live in an area where it’s cold and rainy a lot in the fall. There’s nothing quite like sitting inside with a warm cup of coffee, cozy and watching your kids happily play with something homemade.
I have 3-4 fall scents but you can experiment with your own!

Why do we love homemade?

Homemade play dough is one of the easiest and most fun activities to set up for kids. Plus, making it homemade makes it so you can customize it for whatever you like!
It’s soft, squishy, and perfect for little hands to explore their sensory needs to their hearts desire. Making playdough as a full activity will bring so much joy to your kids. Children love to be involved and feel like they are helping or accomplishing something. So something as easy as a few ingredients and some water is the perfect stage!
So what exactly do I mean by taste safe?
Parents often wonder why one recipe is labeled “taste-safe” and the other is called “Classic” or “non-edible” when both use common kitchen ingredients. Here’s the difference:
- Taste-Safe Playdough is made with ingredients that are harmless if little ones take a lick or nibble (like cornstarch and pudding mix). It’s designed with babies and toddlers in mind, who are more likely to mouth or taste their play materials.
- Classic “Non-Edible” Playdough uses edible ingredients like flour, salt, and cream of tartar, but in amounts that aren’t safe to consume for little ones. The high salt content in particular can make kids sick if they eat too much, and cream of tartar may upset tummies in large amounts. This recipe is perfect for older kids who understand that playdough is for playing, not eating.
Both are technically edible, but only the first is safe for mouthing. The second is better for durability and extended play.
Why make it and not just buy it?
Honestly? For me, its simply just fun. I have no issue with buying store bought playdough but as a mom, I really get so much out of personally making and setting up things for my kids that they enjoy. Then I can say “I did that” or “I made that” it feels like an accomplishment to me.
This can be a fun “cooking” activity to do together. When you are done, they can play independently. Or you guys can enjoy your creations together.
Cost effective? Maybe. But it doesn’t last as long as store bought play dough so, maybe not. The benefit is that you control what its made with, and you can customize it for different play set-ups.
This is also a perfect little activity to do with your kids to teach them measuring, pouring, mixing kneading and skills in the kitchen without the risk of what you are eating getting ruined. They can play with it after and it makes a super fun activity that has added pride to it because, THEY MADE IT!

Taste safe play dough recipe:
The taste safe version of play dough is so quick and easy to make. It only lasts a couple of days, but I don’t even care about that. If you keep it for a few days you will likely need to store with a damp paper towel or add a little water when you get it back out.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of cornstarch
- 1 packet (or 1/4 cup) of pudding, any kind you want really (I found butterscotch or vanilla work best for fall scents)
- 1/3 – 1/2 cup warm water
That’s it. Combine all the ingredients into a bowl and mix until it’s not too sticky. Slowly add more water (1 TBS at a time). You can also add sprinkles of cornstarch. Adjust until it is a consistency you like. Then you are ready to go.
Fun, smells amazing, and safe for your little ones.

Mix-ins and play ideas

Here are some fun mix ins and play ideas to make the play last a little longer:
- Add cookie cutter stamps and rolling pins for fun shapes. These are the cookie stamps I use for real food and they are perfect for playdough too!
- And these stamps are fun for Halloween play!
- Add little baking tools and cupcake liners for fun pretend play
- Add in rice or dried chickpeas or even oatmeal for a fun sensory experience
- Edible glitter and sprinkles are a super fun edition to the taste safe-version, and regular orange glitter could be so fun for the classic!
Here is a list of some fun mix-ins we have found. We also have some container options for storage if you want something dedicated. A cheap plastic airtight container works just fine though.
